Broadband offensive: Hungary, Slovakia, Italy and Slovenia are connected to Telekom's network
25.06.2003 11:53

Telekom Austria is expanding its high-capacity 320 Gbit/s rings – Budapest and Bratislava are connected to the existing Jet2Web Stream between Vienna, Brno, Prague, Munich and Frankfurt – Additional expansion to Milan, Marburg and Laibach – Carrier and business customers depend on the reliable service and high capacity of the network

Telekom Austria is expanding its services in Central, Southern and Southeastern Europe by extending its Jet2Web Stream broadband network – which offers speeds of up to 320 Gbit/s – to Slovakia, Hungary, Italy and Slovenia. In addition to the high-capacity ring that has been in operation from Vienna to Brno, Prague and Frankfurt and back to Vienna via Munich and Salzburg since July 2001, Telekom Austria is now operating three additional fibre optic rings over the following routes:

  • Vienna – Ivancice – Budapest – Bratislava – Vienna
  • Vienna – Milan – Vienna
  • Vienna – Graz – Laibach – Marburg

“Our over 3,700 kilometre long Jet2Web Stream allows us to offer our national and international customers the quality that they have come to expect from Telekom Austria beyond Austria's borders. Initial experiences have shown that international telecommunications companies and national business customers with locations in our eastern neighbour countries appreciate our reliable service and the high capacity of our network,” explains Telekom Austria COO Rudolf Fischer, reporting on the nearly two years of operation of the fibre optic ring. Renowned international telecommunications companies like Telecom Italia Sparkle, TeliaSonera, Sprint and BT Ignite, as well as national business customers such as bauMax, IT-Austria and the pharmaceuticals company Baxter rely on Telekom Austria’s broadband services and already use the services of the Jet2Web Stream.

High demand for network security
“In order to remain viable in the face of global competition, more and more customers are moving to an end-to-end telecommunications infrastructure that is managed by a single operator to ensure smooth communication,” stresses Josef Trimmel, director of wholesale activities at Telekom Austria. “Our fibre optic rings offer a cross-border, uniform transmission technology, which in turn allows seamless monitoring and control – and therefore higher availability and security – that is not possible when a connection uses networks from different operators,” continues Trimmel.
The ring structure of the network, which is based on a pair of redundant optical fibres, offers additional security. A connection is established in the other direction in the event of a technical defect, thereby preventing network failure. “This is another important factor for businesses that choose Telekom Austria’s broadband infrastructure,” explains Trimmel.
